Reclaiming Power

Reclaiming Power: How Trauma-Informed Martial Arts Is Helping Abuse Survivors Heal and Protect Themselves

By Coach Jen

For survivors of abuse — whether emotional, physical, or sexual — the journey to healing can feel overwhelming, long, and lonely. But in a training room in Largo, Florida, something different is happening. Survivors are stepping onto the mats. They’re learning boundaries. They’re rebuilding trust in their bodies. They’re reclaiming power — one movement at a time.

This is trauma-informed martial arts — a specialized approach to self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that goes far beyond combat or competition. It’s about healing. Empowerment. Safety. And control.

And at the forefront of this movement is Coach Jen, a certified Gracie University instructor and Program Director at Gracie Largo West — home to Florida’s fastest-growing women’s Jiu-Jitsu program.

The Problem With Traditional Self-Defense

Most self-defense training is designed around speed, physicality, and aggression — often ignoring the unique needs of survivors.

“Too many women are told that they can learn to protect themselves in a one-hour seminar,” says Coach Jen. “That creates a false sense of security. True self-defense is built over time, through muscle memory, emotional support, and a training environment where safety isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a commitment.”

As a survivor of domestic and narcissistic abuse herself, Coach Jen brings a lived understanding of the emotional weight many women carry into the gym. Her classes are designed to remove the pressure to “tough it out” and instead focus on skill-building through trust, support, and patience.

What Is Trauma-Informed Martial Arts?

Trauma-informed martial arts is an approach to teaching that recognizes how trauma — especially interpersonal trauma — affects the body, mind, and nervous system.

At Gracie Largo West, this looks like:

  • Consent-based training: No one touches you without clear permission.
  • Emotional safety: Students are never forced into high-stress drills or partner exercises before they’re ready.
  • Choice-centered instruction: Students can opt out or observe without judgment.
  • Validation: Survivors are believed, supported, and never blamed for their past experiences.

This kind of training environment gives students a space to rebuild their relationship with control — over their body, their boundaries, and their personal power.

Healing Isn’t Just Mental — It’s Physical

Abuse lives in the body. Trauma-informed martial arts helps survivors reconnect with their bodies in a positive, empowering way.

“We teach women how to use leverage, timing, and composure to protect themselves — not brute strength,” says Coach Jen. “They begin to feel strong, capable, and most importantly, safe.”

For many students, the training isn’t just self-defense — it’s therapy in motion.

One student shared:

“This is the first space where I felt like I didn’t have to explain myself or my past. I could just learn, grow, and finally start to feel like myself again.”

A New Standard for Women’s Self-Defense

Coach Jen is leading more than a program — she’s leading a shift. A shift away from male-dominated gyms with outdated dynamics and toward female-led spaces where women support women.

Under her leadership, Gracie Largo West has:

  • Built the largest women’s program in Florida
  • Developed custom fight simulation scenarios to help survivors test their skills in safe, controlled ways
  • Created a curriculum focused on real-world threats
  • Provided guidance and support for students developing exit strategies from unsafe relationships

More Than a Class — A Community

What makes trauma-informed martial arts so powerful isn’t just the techniques — it’s the community.

“It’s not just about teaching women how to defend themselves,” says Coach Jen. “It’s about showing them they’re not alone. That they have strength inside them they didn’t even know was there. And that they are never, ever powerless again.”

How to Get Involved

Classes are held at Gracie Largo West and are open to women and girls of all experience levels — no prior training required. Survivors are welcome, believed, and supported from day one.
